Pumpkin Sound Boxes FREEBIE


I made some FREEBIE pumpkin sound boxes for you to use with your guided reading books.  Just laminate and use dry erase markers and you are set!!  You can grab them below- just click on the picture.


My students are working on short a words right now.  We are doing -at and -am words.  This is the first that we have done sound boxes this year so they are learning the routine but they always catch on quickly.  I tell them a word and we stretch it out together saying the words slowly.  Sometimes they put multiple letters in the same box.  I let them know that we are listening for all of the sound in the word and we write them together.  Here is a picture.  They love to do this during word work in our guided reading groups.

Parent Tips and Tricks #2- sight words

Here is the second newsletter that I am sending to parents this year.  I will be adding them throughout the year to the packet on TpT.   This one is letting them know the importance of sight words.  I have listed some of the first words we are learning.  I realize that we don't all use the same lists but many of the words will be the same.  I use the Lucy Calkins List from the Teachers College of Reading and Writing.  I did a post about why I choose to use this list.  You can check out that blog post here.

Scoop it up! Counting nickels and pennies

We do Everyday Math in our district and there is a game called Nickel/Penny Grab and yesterday I went to make copies so that the kids could play.  It is a very boring worksheet even though the kids enjoy playing the game.  So, I thought I would spice it up a little!!

I made a new game that is similar called Scoop it up!  The object is to get the kids counting money with nickels and pennies.  They work in pairs and get a bowl with nickels and pennies in it.  They also have a spoon so that they can scoop out the money.  Each child takes a scoop (when they get better, I will let them do two or three scoops).  They then separate their money into two groups (nickels and pennies).  They each add their own money and record it on the worksheet along with their partner's amount.  I tell them that their "ice cream cone" cost that amount of money.  Then I have them either circle the most expensive or least expensive cone.  I have this game here for you as a freebie!!  I hope you enjoy it.  Please leave me some feedback and become a follower on my blog and TpT store for more freebies in the future!

Pictures are GOOD!

Every year I always have students who tell me that their parents cover up the pictures when the kids are just learning how to read.  At the beginning of each year I really try to find ways to let the kiddos know that the pictures are important and will help them learn how to read.  

One lesson that I do is with the book Frog Food.  This is a big book (and little ones for the kids) from Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI) by Fountas and Pinnell.  I love the books for LLI.  Fountas and Pinnell worked with authors and illustrators to make wonderful leveled books for beginning readers.  If you are looking for an intervention program- I highly recommend it:)  You can check it out here. Anyway, when I introduce the book Frog Food I first show them the word "pancakes" and ask them if they know that word- they of course say no and I let them know that I don't expect them to know that word because it is a hard word.  

Then I tell them that they will be able to figure it out.  I then open up the book so that they can see the picture and we read together.  "I like bugs on pancakes."  Of course they get it every time.  We talk about how the pictures can help up figure out new words.  


Once they grasp this concept I then talk about how our "pictures" must match the word.  We look at the first letter to see if it matches what we say.  I of course make a couple of errors as we are reading along.  For example, I read "I like bugs on toast." and it says, "I like bugs on bread."  They pick up on this quickly.  We also use highlighter tape to highlight the first letter of the words to make sure that they match what we think the picture is.  This visual gets them checking their own reading.

Boy do they feel successful right from the start with their reading.  I LOVE IT!!

One of my goals this year to have more communication with parents and how they can help their child at home.  I have started a newsletter called Parent Tips and Tricks.  I plan to send these home throughout the school year.  I have only made one so far and plan to make more every couple of weeks or so to help parents learn what we are teaching at school.  I plan to offer these for free throughout the year as I make them.  If you subscribe by e-mail to the blog you will be notified when I make any new posts and you will be sure not to miss them.  Here is the first one- and my focus is about pictures being important as well as finding a place and time to read at home.

Here are some pictures of one way I practice sight words in my classroom.  When the students come into the room they have to say the "secret password" by touching the hand.

Then, I made a cute "safari" themed mat for the ground where the students have to step on the pictures and read the words!  (I just laminate the paper and use a vis-a-vis marker to write on it.  The vis-a-vis marker comes off with water or marker board cleaner).

Kids love it!!
