Steve Harpster School Visit

Our school recently had author/illustrator Steve Harpster visit our school for a family event!  It was a great time had by all.  Steve creates books for kids that get kids drawing, creating, and imagining.  We had a team of teachers that organized this event.  We had three 45 minute assemblies during the school day grouped by grade levels.  The kids got to draw right along with him the entire time.  I have never seen so many 6 and 7 year olds engrossed for that amount of time.  It was wonderful!

We also had a family event in the evening.  I was unable to attend because my son had a basketball game but it got great reviews!  Families brought blankets and drawing supplies and filled our gymnasium!  They got to eat cookies and have a "snowball fight" using paper!  The event was supposed to end at 8pm but Steve stayed until EVERY child got a picture drawn into their books by him if they wanted one.  He also signs every book that the students ordered!

The best part of it all you ask???  If you live in Ohio (I believe he is in the Cincinnati area), he will come to your school at no cost AND you get 30% of book sales donated toward you school.  Now that is awesome!

Here is his website.  Harptoons.  He has videos that show you step by step how to draw many different animals and monsters using letters and numbers!

  1. Hi Jennie!
So he does not charge a visit fee, just benefits from his book sales? And he stays all day and into the evening. Did you pay for his transportation/hotel/meals? I need details! My school has not had an author's visit in too long!

  4. Thank you for this post. I passed it along to my sister who is an illustrator. The idea of having the kids draw along with the illustrator is a fabulous idea! What a wonderful time the students had!
